Open Call: Materiality Unleashed 

Li Tang Gallery is thrilled to announce our open call for submissions for the upcoming art exhibition, Materiality Unleashed. This exhibition delves into the exploration of materiality in contemporary art, encompassing the physicality, texture, and inherent qualities of artistic materials and mediums. We encourage artists to embrace experimentation and push the boundaries of materials, allowing their chosen medium to guide and inspire their creative process.

Artists at any stage of their career are invited to submit their work for consideration by our esteemed guest jury Han Qin and Sun Young Kang. The online group exhibition will be thoughtfully curated by the Li Tang team and extensively promoted on Li Tang Gallery’s website, social media platforms, and through press coverage in both the United States and China.

About Jury

HAN QIN

While primarily focusing on digital art, Han’s work also extends to printmaking, video, installation, and performance art. She earned her B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Printmaking from China Academy of Art (Hangzhou) and her M.F.A. in Digital Arts from Pratt Institute (New York) in 2017. Currently, She lives and works in New York and Hangzhou as an artist, and adjunct professor at Stony Brook University (New York) and China Academy of Art. Han’s work has continued to exhibit in the U.S. and China, including Nassau County Museum of Art, Roslyn, NY; Long Island Biennial, The Heckscher Museum of Art, Huntington, New York (2016, 2018); Open books, Connecticut College, New London, Connecticut (2018); Forms and thoughts: The 8th New Star Art Award Shortlisted Artists’ Group Exhibition 2017, Deji Art Museum, Nanjing, China, Han Qin: Where is Home, Long Island Museum, Stony Brook, New York (2017) and Changjiang International Photography & Video Biennale, Changjiang Museum of Contemporary Art, Chongqing, China (2017). 

Han’s workflows from her experience of home and relocation. Moved from China at age 24, she feels the ambivalence between nostalgia and the wistfulness of transition. This encouraged her to create this uncertainty and spectacular feeling throughout her work. Interested in the social phenomenon of groups and individuals moving from place to place, she translated the moments of passing through, getting togethering, migrating, and even conflicting.

SUN YOUNG KANG

Sun Young Kang is a book and installation artist who creates physical and metaphorical spaces by incorporating various dimensions and metaphors associated with each material to challenge the duality fundamental to human existence. Originally from South Korea, she resided in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA for a decade and currently is based in Western New York. Kang received her BFA in Korean Painting from Ewha Woman’s University in Seoul, Korea, and her MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA in 2007.

Kang has exhibited her work nationally and internationally, including solo and group exhibitions at venues such as Whanki Museum in Seoul, Korea, Nanchizi Museum in Beijing, China, Queens Museum, NY, Susquehanna Art Museum, PA, Carnegie Museum of Art, PA, Pennsylvania State Museum, PA, and others. In 2021, she was named the UAH Contemporary Art Fellow, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts at the University of Alabama in Huntsville, AL. She has also been the recipient of several grants and awards, including the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, NY; New York Foundation for the Arts (NYSCA/NYFA) Artist Fellowship, NY; the West Collection LIFT Grant and Acquisition Award, PA, PRIX Whanki 2017 from Whanki Foundation/Museum in Seoul, Korea and the Center for Emerging Visual Artists Fellowship in Philadelphia, PA. Her work can be found in numerous museum and library special collections.

CHUN HUA CATHERINE DONG

Chun Hua Catherine Dong (she/they) is a Chinese-born Tiohtià:ke/ Montréal-based multimedia artist. Dong received an MFA at Intermedia from Concordia University and a BFA at Visual Art from Emily Carr University Art & Design in Canada. Dong has exhibited their works at The Musée d’Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne in France, Quebec City Biennial, The International Digital Art Biennial Montreal (BIAN), MOMENTA | Biennale de l’image, Kaunas Biennial, Canadian Cultural Centre Paris, The Aine Art Museum in Tornio, Bury Art Museum in Manchester, Museo de la Cancillería in Mexico City, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, DongGong Museum of Photograph in South Korea, He Xiangning Art Museum in Shenzhen, Hubei Museum of Fine Art in China, Art Museum at University of Toronto, Varley Art Gallery of Markham, and so on.

Dong has performed in many international performance art festivals, such as Rapid Pulse International Performance Art Festival in Chicago, 7a*11d International Festival of Performance Art in Toronto, ENCUENTRO Performance in Santiago, The Great American Performance Art in New York, Place des Arts in Montreal, Infr’Action in Venice, Dublin Live Art Festival in Dublin, Experimental Action/ Performance Art in Houston, Internationales Festival für Performance in Mannheim, Inverse Performance Art Festival in California, and many public art galleries and spaces in Europe, North and South America.

Among many other grants and awards, Dong was the recipient of the Franklin Furnace Award for performance art in New York in 2014, listed the “10 Artists Who Are Reinventing History” by Canadian Art in 2017, and was named “The Artist of the Year” at the DongGang International Photo Festival in South Korea in 2018.  Dong was also a finalist for Contemporary Art Award at Le Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (Prix en art actuel du MNBAQ) 2020, and awarded with Cultural Diversity in Visual Arts Award by the Conseil des arts de Montréal in 2021.

PHIL ZHENG CAI

Phil Zheng Cai graduated from Sotheby’s Institute of Art with a master’s degree in 2014. He has held posts at Mary Boone Gallery and Phillips Auctioneers, and is currently a Partner at Eli Klein Gallery. Focusing on Chinese contemporary art, he has been with the Gallery since 2017 whose represented artists have been featured in countless international broadcasts, publications, and critical reviews. 

Phil Cai has curated numerous solo exhibitions at Eli Klein Gallery, presenting Chinese contemporary artists such as Cai Dongdong, Chow Chun Fai, Shen Fan, Li Hongbo, Ho Kan, Ji Zhou among many others. He has also curated group exhibitions that received critical acclaim. His most recent curated exhibition “Alienation?” in 2021 was reviewed by the Brooklyn Rail. He has participated in panel discussions and talks at institutions such as the SCAD Museum of Art and the Asia Society Museum New York. 

Phil Zheng Cai also works in the domain of art criticism and translation of texts on philosophy. His exhibition review “Enacting Disassociation – Jean-Luc Moulène Solo Exhibition at Miguel Abreu Gallery”; “Life as an Invitation – Yoan Capote Solo Exhibition at Jack Shainman Gallery”; “Tan Siyuan – No Stopping the Wanting to Stop” and critical essay “Take a Step: Phil Zheng Cai on the Opening of M+ Museum” were featured in the Widewalls Magazine. His most recent critical text “Everything can become an NFT, is it true?” was published by the New York Time T Magazine China. His translated book “The Story of Philosophy” was published by Shanghai Yuandong Press in 2020.

E.E. Jacks

The paintings of E.E. Jacks capture life. Her intent is to imbue motion & emotion. Her work encompasses Expressionism and Representationalism. She also practices plein air painting, favoring oil paint as her medium of choice. 

Jacks has received several awards and been featured in various periodicals. Her work has also been showcased in museums such as MOLAA, Olaf Wieghorst Museum, the Yellowstone and Yosemite Museums and been recognized and exhibited in the John Wayne Airport and California State Capitol. She is a poet and has currently published four books of poetry and prose.

E.E. Jacks has also been a gallery founder, published ‘APERO’ an international online and printed fine art catalogue, has juried many exhibitions and written numerous art reviews. 

Jacks is a professional art advisor & curator of traditional & contemporary spaces. With long- standing artist & art community connections, Jacks can strategically acquire & integrate art into any lifestyle or aesthetic.

Jacks works from her home studio in Southern California and exhibits her work as a permanent artist at Quorum Gallery in Laguna Beach, Tirage Fine Art in Carlsbad and in various Galleries and Museums nationwide.

Li Tang Gallery is looking for artists who explore the realms of portraiture through both realistic and nonrealistic practices to evoke an emotional response regarding these contemporary issues. From paintings, to works on paper, to digital creations, there is no limitation on the media that can be submitted. Through the portraiture discipline, Li Tang Gallery is looking for artists who question our understanding of the world and our positions in it.

PHILIP A. JIANNAN WU

Jiannan Wu (b.1990) is a China-born, New York based artist who creates sculptures and wall reliefs made from resin. He received his BFA Degree in Sculpture from China Academy of Art and his MFA Degree in Sculpture from New York Academy of Art.

Jiannan Wu is the recipient of the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation grant, winner of 2017 Dexter Jones Award presented by American National Sculpture Society,  winner of Compleat Sculptor Award, and other awards. He is selected as 2020 AACYF Top 30 Under 30 presented by All America Chinese Youth Federation. His work is recognized as The Best Original Sculpture in 2019 by Sculpture Magazine of China. His works have also been displayed on numerous exhibitions at renowned venues such as Accesso Gallery in Italy, Gallery Poulsen and Art Herning in Denmark, the Sotheby’s, Art Miami, and Southampton Arts Center in America, Bonner Kunstverein in Germany, Chongqing Contemporary Art Museum in China, etc. His works and art achievements have been published in The New York Times, The China Press, Metal Magazine, Beautiful Bizarre Magazine, Hi-Fructose Magazine, Collections Magazine, T(here) Magazine, etc.

About Jury

JENNY GUO

Jenny Guo is an Emmy award-winning creative producer, XR and NFT arts patron, and co-founder of LumiereVR and Highstreet. She has been named on Forbes 30 under 30 in 2018 and AACYF 30 under 30 in 2020. She was also recognized as the top 10 Asian American entrepreneurs in 2021. 

The VR projects she had worked on have also won multiple awards in both Asia and the U.S. She has produced and distributed multiple VR art installations, including renowned artist Rachel Maclean’s I’m Terribly Sorry with KWM Art Center, Wang Xin’s Maybe it’s Time to Refresh the Art World a Little Bit at K11 art mall in Hong Kong, and Tian Zhuo Chen’s Trance. Her producing work Living Distance with artist Xin Liu has been selected into multiple renowned film festivals, including Sundance, SXSW, Beijing Film Festival, and it’s the first Chinese immersive project that Sundance New Frontier Lab has taken on. Her latest VR artwork Devil’s Ivy with artist Liu Wa was shown at Busan Biennale and Sandbox Immersive Festival. This film has won the young creative award from International Emmys. Ms. Guo is passionate about conservation and Climate change projects. She has a new VR film on Glacier conservation coming out this year.  

Ms. Guo double majored in Electronic Art and Political Studies at Bard College and later studied Creative Producing at Columbia University. She had extensive experience in auction houses and art dealing between China and the U.S. 

Ms. Guo is also a Sundance fellow and researcher at Harvard Visualization Lab. She has spoken at multiple conferences, including Harvard Graduate School of Design, SXSW, Wharton School of Business, J.P Morgan, TEDxBohaibay, and Christie’s.

NIX LIU XIN

Nix Liu Xin is a mixed-reality director and designer. He works on various mediums such as filmmaking, motion visual arts, spatial design, XR experiences, and volumetric photography (3D scan). His practice centers around the connections of digital and physical realities, merging architecture, form, movement, visual effects, color, and sound.

As the founder and creative director of the studio Play.Work, Nix has collaborated with Burberry, Bosie, Chris Lee (Li Yuchun), London Fashion Week, Microsoft, Miss Grit, NYLON, Polestar Cars, SCI-Arc Robot Lab, Victor Ma (Ma Boqian), Wallpaper, WhatWorld Club, etc., to create bespoke films and music videos fusing CGI virtual and live-action real worlds.

Nix is currently a Master in Design Studies (Media/Technology) candidate at Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He holds an M.Arch 2 degree from SCI-Arc; and a B.A. in Architecture with an Honors degree from the University of Liverpool where his graduation project was awarded the Sheppard Robson Jicwood Prize.

Nix was endowed with numerous awards. To name a few: he won the first prize of the prestigious CGarchitect 3D Awards 2020 and was nominated in 2019; he was selected as one of 12 artists to hold solo exhibitions at Lianzhou Foto Festival in 2019. Recently, Nix co-curated the international New Digital Design Forum, and invited world-renowned artists, designers, and professors to bridge the communication of Post-Digital culture between west and east. Nix has been invited to give guest lectures and speakings at UCL Bartlett School of Architecture, Tongji University, Gensler SF, etc. Additionally, his works have been exhibited at World Trade Center in New York City, Los Angeles, Liverpool, Beijing, Suzhou, Shanghai, and so on.

CURRY SICONG TIAN

Started as a Student Academy Award Gold Winner, US-China based multidisciplinary filmmaker Curry Sicong Tian has held various roles including director, concept/digital artist, 3d mographer, fashion photographer, creative director at studios internationally. 

Born and raised in China, she is aiming to bridge the gap between eastern and western culture, video art and film, expanding beyond into 3d motion graphic and alternative modes of storytelling. She has established an unparalleled trust with the clients like Mercedes Benz, Apple BEATS, Canon; and the most respected artists in the world.
